More Information

Project description:

The study area is located in the gulf of Agios Nikolaos on Crete's northern coast. The location of the project is located within the harbor of Agios Nikolaos and in front of hotel "Hermes" and "KORALI" in Rocky Northwest coastline of Ag. Nikolaos. Along the entire coast had built a vertical retaining wall of the coastal road, and built a small concrete’s pier, in order to protect the coast from erosion, but also the concentration of sand on the beach. The pier did not work as expected and the wall suffered from wave action.

The coastal engineering study included the following:

  • Data collection: a) climatic data of the region (e.g. rainwater run-off and according data, etc) in order to calculate the wave climate in the deep water, b) aerial photos of different years for the analysis of the evolution of the coastline.
  • Numerical modeling: Waves’ transformation from deep water to the coastal zone taking into account refraction, defraction and waves’ breaking.
  • Sediment’s Recognition: seabed sediments collection
  • Artificial beaches: Calculated the median grain size in order to design the beach profile by using numerical simulation’s models (SBEACH).
